If this is your first visit to Johnny Boy's Walkabout Blog, welcome and
here's some information which may assist you in using this resource:
- The Home page is an index to the listed Walk
Reports and Supporting Information. It consists of 2 tabs:
- Walks Planned and Completed - showing planned date, walk name as a link to the planned walk description, estimated distance and vertical climb, estimated grading; + Completed Walks - showing date, walk name as a link to the walk report, distance, vertical climb, grading, walk number as a link to the walk track overview, link to KMZ file (you need the Google Earth application installed to use this, or else slap the full URL (including http://www... and %20 to replace every space I've used in filenames) into the search box of Google Maps at https://maps.google.com.au/), link to photographs of the walk
- Supporting Information - an index to pages of suporting information.
- As well, the Home page shows a link to the latest walk report, a panorama/theme photo from the last significant walk, a link to previous panorama/theme photos and various social media and following services (Facebook, Twitter and RSS feed). There is also an embedded Picasa slide show of photographs from the latest walk (not visible from a smart phone).
- Each walk report contains the walk description, any further information, link to photos stored on Google's Picasa service, sometimes a YouTube video, track maps, link to Google Earth KMZ file, track notes and summary distance, climb, time and grading. You can either enjoy the walk vicariously or, better still, have a go
yourself. But note the Disclaimer, Warning and Advice and Grading. Work up to things!
- Photographs are presented as thumbnails (in older walks) or as links to Picasa-stored albums. Click on thumbnails to show a larger
picture.
See the Pictures page for more detail.
- There are a number of ways to search for information:
- If you want to know when a new Walk Report is available, subscribe to my RSS feed. See the RSS Feed page for more information. I'll also often tweet.
- There are a number of additional presentation techniques that I'm always
experimenting with, such as Twitter (@JohnnyBoyACT), RSS feeds, slideshows, videos on YouTube (my public channel is http://www.youtube.com/user/JohnnyBoysWalkabout/videos), stitched photo panoramas, additional photos stored on third party sites (Facebook,
box.net, Picasa), clickable map images, sound bites, Google Earth kmz files.
- For technophiles, from Nov 09 I am trying to write standard XHTML and
CSS code (XHTML 1.0 | CSS 2.1).
- In H2 2012, I made a crude attempt at formatting the Home page and new walk reports for smart phone access. I design on a 24" FHD (1920*1200pixel 16:10 landscape format) LCD panel and a 17.3" FHD (1920*1080pixel 16:9 landscape format) laptop, so if you have a
smaller resolution or display, the page formatting for older walk reports may look a bit wonky and
you'll have to scroll around.
- Many people contact me for further information. Email me, as you might have something I'd like.
